Are the Irish the only people who drill Christmas trees?

I bought one of those Christmas Tree stands a couple of weeks ago. It took me until last night to figure out how to open the cursed thing. The instructions aren't too clear and the clamping bits that grip the tree are pretty dangerous so I didn't want to stick my fingers in there and poke about.

It would not be fun trying to eat dinner minus a few fingers on both hands.

I mentioned in the office a couple of weeks ago that I was going to buy one of these things and a colleague from Sweden mentioned that he thought it was strange that more people in Ireland don't use these kind of stands. He said that the idea of drilling a hole in the base of the tree was kind of unique to Ireland.

I'm inclined to think that he might be right. For years and years whenever we buy a Christmas tree the person selling it always asks if I want the base drilled for a stand. And of course I always say yes because I have one of those screw-on stands.

Instead with this new base I'm going to put the tree into a flat base which is heavy and which has clamping arms on the inside which grip the tree trunk and keep it steady.

The other amazing thing is that you fill the base with water and it has a little sensor that tells you when it's got the right amount of water in it.

In the past when the tree is fixed to a screw-on base it gets no more water and it's pretty much dead within days. Before you know it there are pine needles all over the floor, or in my case, in the childrens' mouths.

It does seem that these bases have been around for a while. So I'm wondering if it's just in Ireland where we drill the bottom of the Christmas Tree?

My family has always had an artificial tree. No worries at all. Just 10 minutes to lug it up from the basement and set it up, and you're good to go.

oh yeah. I forgot about those trees. Lots of people have those in Ireland nowadays.

Last year the fashion-conscious TV presenters were telling people that black Christmas trees were the season's must-have.

I'm not sure if that's a great idea but I have seen red, green, gold, silver and purple artificial trees on sale this year.

Whatever floats your Christmas boat I guess.
