My son starts school this week. It's exciting and scary at the same time.
At home we're trying not to make too much of a fuss about it for fear of making him anxious. So we've not really mentioned it too much.
My wife thinks he's excited at this stage but I daren't ask him directly if this is true.
A couple of weeks back we took him to Dun Laoghaire to buy his uniform. It's always been my understanding that young children starting school wear a uniform but speaking with colleagues from other countries it seems that this is not the case everywhere else in Europe.
Then on Saturday I took him to Dundrum to buy his first proper pair of school shoes. I'm not sure how well I did since the pair he picked out have hidden compartments in which a toy car can be concealed.
He confirmed shortly after that when he met his future new teacher a few months back she told all the boys that they can't bring any toys to school.
So I guess he'll be wearing a new pair of black leather shoes with 2 empty compartments. So too will just about all the other boys I'd guess.
Tonight we'll be trying to work out how long it will take to drive to the school on day 1. We don't want to be the parents of the only boy who was late on day 1.
