Can you get tetanus from your neighbour's bin?

We're having some very windy and wet weather here in Ireland right now.

It's been like that for last few weeks and it makes it a bit precarious when putting the bins out.

Take this morning for example.

I was leaving the house just before 7am and when I opened the front door all I could see was paper and trash all over the front garden. It was wet and stuck to the driveway.

I picked up what I could and stuck it in our green recycle bin and wheeled the bin out to the gate for collection later this morning.

Then I noticed our neighbour's bin had fallen over and all their waste paper and card was blowing everywhere, into my garden especially.

A little voice in my head said "leave it" but another voice made me pick it up. So there I was in a suit picking up wet trash in the dark at 7am in the morning.

There was all sorts of paper there. Bank statements. Medical receipts. All manner of things.

Normally I'd be tempted to have a bit of a read but it was dark, windy, wet and way to early for that kind of curiousity.

So I picked up what I could and stuffed it back in their bin.

I got in the car and drove to work, contemplating whether I was likely to have contracted some illness or disease. I figured that I can't recall anyone ever picking up anything harmful from paper. Well there was that whole Anthrax in the mail thing a few years ago but beyond that there's not much grounds for worry.

I washed my hands when I got to work anyhow. Just to be safe.
