Don't put toothpaste in your eye

OH MY GOD. That is soooooo sore.

Last night while brushing my teeth on my way to bed, I inadvertently flicked some toothpaste into my eye. I don't know how exactly I did it but I definitely did flick a little bit in there.

The searing pain, the burning yet cold feeling right on the eyeball. Ouch.

I washed my face with cold water and after about 5 minutes it was not too bad. I had this crazy mental idea that I would go to bed and somehow the toothpaste would burn my eyeball right through and I would wake up blind in one eye. Happy to report that I am not blind in one eye (either eye) and that the "burn my eyeball" idea was pure and utter panic fantasy.

I've been trying to find out what element of toothpaste makes it hurt the eye so much. Not much success finding anything out and I am loathe to write to Colgate asking them to explain which constituent causes my eyes pain. They might think it strange.

Then I read this. Apparently if you're going to a riot, or other civil disturbance, always make sure that you bring some fluoride-based toothpaste with you. Should the instruments of the state decide to fire CS gas at you, you can conveniently whip out the old tube of toothpaste and run it into your eyes.

I think this is a toss-up between "AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH... that CS gas is burning my eyes" and "AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH.... that toothpaste is burning my eyes but on the other hand they do smell minty and might even be a little whiter tomorrow".

Hmmm.

I'd avoid the whole toothpaste in the eyes no matter what. It is not fun.

p.s. what is with the whole Dog Toothpaste scene... who brushes their dog's teeth? is this normal? do they floss too?

That sounds akin to rubbing your eyes after chopping hot peppers. I did that once - once - after dicing a Habanero. Not fun in the least.

Bizarre that they would recommend putting toothpaste in your eyes to protect from chemical warfare. If the toothpaste is supposed to spare you, I can't imagine what the chemicals feel like!

And no one I know brushes their dog's teeth. My vet actually recommended I brush my cats' teeth, and I laughed.

I recently found a single, broken canine tooth on the floor of my bedroom, so perhaps the brushing isn't such a bad idea. I'd have to declaw them first, though.

Ok well this seems to be a very old post, however I was looking up the effects of toothpaste in the eye on Google and this is what came up. Why was I looking this up? Well, I was taking my contact out and apparently i had a blob of toothpaste on my finger and immediately I thought I went blind. I think it was because my contact was out in my left eye, but let me tell you... intense pain. I'm glad to know your eye turned out ok.

I am really glad i found this post. The same thing happend to me a little bit of toothpaste flung in my eye while putting it on my toothbrush. Was going to call poison control to make sure i didnt go blind but thought i would google it first sine the pain was slowly decreasing. Thanks for the post!

Glad that those of us walking the planet by day and flicking toothpaste by night are finding some comfort in the fact that a bit of the minty stuff in the eye is not likely to cause total blindness.

I put toothpaste in my eye about 5 minutes ago. I'll try anything once. I did it to supposedly "whiten my eyes". It was far from what I would consider painful. It was just a cold feeling. My eyes are super white now...just put a but in the corner of your eye and then rub across and look around in circles.

This happened to me right when I opened the cap! You know how in chem lab they say "rinse your eyes for 5 min" or something if you get stuff in your eye? I took a large bowl filled with water, put my eye in it and kept it open (as I swimmer I did this all the time), then slowly poured out the water.

I also just got toothpaste in my eye, however I was stupidly dangling the toothpaste above me, precariously.. I was very interested to read that one person had actually put toothpaste in their eyes- on purpose, to WHITEN them? Really? Oh what is the world coming to...
